Friday 21st March – walk **** Sunny

The disco finished before we went to bed so had a good night and woke up about 8 and did exercises quickly before the lift opened as we are directly underneath it and didn’t want an audience! Enjoyed watching the first people going up on the lift and the little ones having their lessons on the learner slope in front of us while we ate our breakfast in the sun. The hightlights included a couple skiing in their swimwear – she had the brightest pink bikini on (!) and a guy dressed in a cow costume complete with head which made mooing noises!!! We walked down the road to have a look at the prices at the lift pass office in case we decide to ski tomorrow and on the way passed 5 Polish and Hungarian coaches marked up with ‘Zero Gravity Camps and Travel for young people’ so that explains last night ‘Ibiza’ style celebrations! We don’t know whether this is a one off special week or whether this is the new Chamrousse approach to business! After looking at the lift prices we went to check out the pool and it looks like you need an access card to get in now:( The notice might have been there when we were here before and everyone ignored it – difficult to say and it doesn’t open until 2 anyway. Visited the 3 ski shops and the Sherpa to get some bread then continued round the loop which takes us back to the van. There were another group of Husky dogs anxious to be chosen to pull the sled where the walks leave the car park. They really do love it and were rolling in the snow and barking to be the chosen ones! All except two who were making sure they looked asleep! Walking past the entrance to the Domaine de l’Arselle noticed a sign we hadn’t seen before saying parking was for residents only! Felt a bit bad about parking right under the lift so moved to a spot with more privacy on the other side of the road. We weren’t keen on being observed from above anyway! The paperwork we had from Snowtrex from when we came here in 2012 and had an apartment was in our file so we have put that in the window (with no dates showing) so it looks like we are going to stay and have just got here a bit early! We are parked next to a tree and there have been several birds including a citril finch which is a first for us – beautiful little thing – bright yellow:) and a ringed ouzel. We had our lunch then set out on our third walk to the Lac Achard. We headed down to the cross country skiing course and watched several groups of children having their first lessons. Great fun watching them all fall down like dominos as they career down the tram lines! It is a great walk – very challenging with lots of steep hills up and deep snow – we should have had racquettes really but it is possible with just walking boots. The best thing to do is walk in another person in walking boots footsteps up the hills! The walk takes you up through woods and alongside a waterfall all the way. Some of the bridges are wooden and some just snow which is a bit of a worry if your foot goes down 3’ in the snow into the stream! Got to frozen and snow covered lake after a couple of hours and sat down under some trees for a well deserved snack:) Walked back a different way which was a bit easier which was just as well as we are rubbish at walking downhill in snow! Got back about 4.30 and the Disco was in full flow again complete with skipping competition (??) so we were beginning to think we might move when they started packing the whole thing including their gazebo tent away! Hoorah! Back to the van for cake and coffee and put lots of seed out for the birds but they haven’t been interested in it yet. We watched lots of people sledging down the piste including a little boy who we think might have been blind, it was very sad but he and his mum and dad looked very happy to be whizzing down the slope. When it got dark watched the piste bashers doing their ‘dance’ around the piste making it beautiful again for tomorrow. We saw a weather forecast on the wall of the cross country hut which said it was going to rain tomorrow:( and snow above 1400m so we will have to see. It will be our first bad weather of the holiday and may influence whether we splash the cash for what would be our most expensive day’s skiing! 35 euros each!! We have got used to getting both of us for under that! Ate a whole bag of peanuts so didn’t bother with a proper tea – just finished off the French bread:)
